Unlocked 3G iPhone on sale in Hong Kong

Unlocked 3G iPhones have started to sell in Hong Kong. This is the first time that unlocked 3G iPhones are being sold anywhere. The unlocked phones can work on any network in the world and cost HK$ 5,400 (£376) and HK$ 6,200 (£432) respectively for the 8GB & 16GB versions. When converted to US Dollars this turns out to be around $ 700 US for 8GB version & around $ 800 US for the 16GB versions. In euros this turns out to be around € 475 & € 550 respectively.

The Apple HK website mentions to interested customers -

iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.

The thing to note here is that when converted to Indian Rupees, the unlocked 3G iPhone will cost Rs.32000 & Rs. 37000 for the 8GB & the 16GB versions respectively, which is not much more than the Rs.31000 & Rs.36100 price of the 3G iPhone in India, however the 3G iPhones selling in India are locked either to Vodafone or Bharti Airtel. Aren't Indians being unfairly treated by these companies that despite paying similar amount as their counterparts in Hong Kong, they are getting locked 3G iPhones instead of unlocked ones ? question

Blackberry 9500 Storm appears on German Vodafone Site

The numerous time leaked Blackberry 9500 Storm made an appearance on German Vodafone site. It has been leaked a number of times but it hasn't been officially announced by RIM, though Verizon & now Vodafone have put them on their respective sites. The 9500 Storm is the first Touch Screen Phone from RIM & features a 3.3 inch Touch Screen having a resolution of 360 x 480. It has tri-band 3G with HSDPA and Quad-band GSM support making it capable of global roaming. The 9500 Storm is running on a 624 MHz CPU and has 192 MB of RAM. It utilizes a new version of the BlackBerry OS, optimized for touchscreen input.

Some of the other extras include a built-in GPS (with A-GPS functionality), Wi-fi, microSD card slot with support for up to 8GB cards and a 3.5mm standard audio jack for plugging your own custom headphones. The 9500 Storm measures 112.5 x 62.2 x 13.9 mm and is also quite thin.

Storm's Touch Screen features True Haptics which offers physical response to user's input on the screen. It feels just like pressing a physical button and the screen actually pushes in when pressing. Along with that, the phone also vibrates a little to tell the user that the input has been recorded. As this stage there is no information about the pricing or the expected availability of the BlackBerry 9500 Storm. Still it appearing on Verizon & Vodafone sites almost simultaneously indicates that it's not too far from being officially launched. Watch out this space.

Samsung launches M8800 Pixon

Samsung today officially announced the M8800 Pixon. The phone is the second 8 Mega Pixel shooter from Samsung after the i8510 Innov8. Smape had yesterday posted a hands on of the device & Mobile Review even posted a detailed review of the phone. The M8800 Pixon has Quad-band GSM support and Tri-band 3G with HSDPA and is fully capable of global roaming. It stands at 107.9 x 54.6 x 13.8mm and weighs mere 109 grams. Featuring a 3.2-inch display with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels the Samsung M8800 Pixon comes as a direct rival of LG KC910 Renoir.

The Samsung M8800 Pixon also include a GPS receiver, built-in accelerometer, FM radio with RDS and microSD memory card slot. In addition to taking exiting 8 megapixel photos its camera is capable of recording WVGA(740 x 480 pixels) videos at 30fps, which is a benchmark in mobile phones till now as Nokia N-Series phones shoot at VGA(640 x 480) resolution only. The Pixon will even have DivX playback and SRS Virtual 5.1 Channel Surround Sound to compete with Dolby Mobile Technology found in LG KC 910 Renoir.

The glaring omission in the Samsung M8800 Pixon specs sheet is the Wi-Fi connectivity which would have made it a complete mobile phone. It is expected to start shipping in mid-October and will retail at 550 euro (880 US dollars).

Samsung Pixon M8800 Review by Mobile Review

Mobile Review has posted a detailed review of the Samsung Pixon M8800.

Much like the INNOV8, the M8800 is an imaging-centric phone, and this time around, to put a special emphasis on its focus, Samsung have come up with a new prefix for this type of phones - PIXON. Nevertheless, the first 8 Mpix cameraphone in their range, the i8510 INNOV8 won’t have its name changed, but all phones to come will feature the “PIXON” part in their names. Curiously, though, non imaging-savvy handsets (even with 8 Mpix cameras) won’t have this prefix either.

Samsung Pixon M8800 leaks, has 8 Mega Pixel Cam

A new 8 Mega Pixel Cameraphone after the i8510 Innov8 from Samsung called the Pixon M8800 has leaked. The M8800 is the successor of the Samsung F480. The Pixon along with the 8 Mega Pixel Cam, has other goodies like GPS, Touch Screen, WVGA Video Recording, Accelerometer & DivX playback support. The only thing which can hurt the Pixon is the lack of the Wi-fi support in it which models like LG KC 910 have. The Samsung M8800 is set to start shipping as early as 10 November 2008 at a starting price of 550 euro (800 US dollars).

Smape has published a hands on of the Samsung Pixon M8800 with pics.
