Blackberry 9500 Storm is finally announced

After numerous leaks, Research in Motion (RIM) finally announced the Blackberry 9500. It will be exclusively sold by Verizon in US, Vodafone in Europe & Telus in Canada. After the final specs were released a notable omission is the lack of Wi-fi in the Storm. That seems to be a big mistake on part of Blackberry to make an iPhone rival Touch Screen Smartphone without Wi-fi functionality. In present times, Wi-fi has become a must in High-end Smartphones & RIM's decision to not pack the 9500 with Wi-fi could hurt it in 9500's sales. Especially when Nokia has started to put Wi-fi in all of it's new N-Series & E-Series phones. In Windows Mobile world, almost all phones have Wi-fi in them. The decision is also confusing as the Blackberry 9000 Bold already has Wi-fi in it.

The Blackberry Storm 9500 will be sold through Vodafone networks and will be free on monthly plans of 35 GBP and up with an 18-month contract. The Blackberry Storm 9530 is the variant of the handset that will be sold in North America through Verizon & Telus. Along with the quad-band GSM and 2100Mhz UMTS support that the 9500 model has, it will also offer CDMA2000 1xEV-DO support. The 9500 Storm will be available for purchase soon.

Blackberry 9500 Storm appears on German Vodafone Site

The numerous time leaked Blackberry 9500 Storm made an appearance on German Vodafone site. It has been leaked a number of times but it hasn't been officially announced by RIM, though Verizon & now Vodafone have put them on their respective sites. The 9500 Storm is the first Touch Screen Phone from RIM & features a 3.3 inch Touch Screen having a resolution of 360 x 480. It has tri-band 3G with HSDPA and Quad-band GSM support making it capable of global roaming. The 9500 Storm is running on a 624 MHz CPU and has 192 MB of RAM. It utilizes a new version of the BlackBerry OS, optimized for touchscreen input.

Some of the other extras include a built-in GPS (with A-GPS functionality), Wi-fi, microSD card slot with support for up to 8GB cards and a 3.5mm standard audio jack for plugging your own custom headphones. The 9500 Storm measures 112.5 x 62.2 x 13.9 mm and is also quite thin.

Storm's Touch Screen features True Haptics which offers physical response to user's input on the screen. It feels just like pressing a physical button and the screen actually pushes in when pressing. Along with that, the phone also vibrates a little to tell the user that the input has been recorded. As this stage there is no information about the pricing or the expected availability of the BlackBerry 9500 Storm. Still it appearing on Verizon & Vodafone sites almost simultaneously indicates that it's not too far from being officially launched. Watch out this space.

Garmin nüvifone Delayed, 3G iPhone breathes easy

Garmin nüvifone which was considered as a rival to the 3G iPhone has been delayed till mid 2009. This leaves lot of room for RIM to tweak the 9500 Thunder to perfection.

"The nuvifone will not be available in fourth quarter as previously announced," said the company in an official statement. "While we had hoped to have carrier launches in the fourth quarter, we have found that meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated. We remain pleased with carrier interest in the device and are working toward making necessary design changes to meet their requirements. We anticipate launching the product during the first half of 2009."

Looks like iPhone 3G & Apple can breathe easy & by then maybe we will seeing a 3rd Gen. iPhone.

RIM Blackberry Thunder Leaks Again, Haptics are visible

The RIM Blackberry Thunder's pics have leaked again. This shows a the lax security setup at RIM. Well we are not complaining as it enables us to see the Haptics enabled Touch Screen of the Thunder. There are speculations that the the Thunder will be renamed as Storm , looks like RIM seems to be sticking with nature on this one.

Talking about the Thunder, it features a large iPhonic Touch Screen complete with Sure Type & QWERTY keypads. The buttons formations give away the Haptics of the Tunder. It's believed to be a slim device to take on the iPhone in not just features but size & dimensions also.

What's so great about the True Haptics in the Thunder is the response got after pressing a button is from the area which was actually pressed unlike the Pseudo Haptics in today's phones where the whole phone vibrates to acknowledge a press. The Thunder will also feature an audible clickety sound to enhance the vibrations.

The 3G less Bold called the 'Javelin' was also leaked & it's confirmed to have GPS, Wi-fi, 3.2 mp cam & 4.6 OS. It will also feature the 480 x 320 screen of the Bold.
