Samsung unveils i7110 Symbian Smartphone

After leaking a couple times, Samsung i7110 has been officially announced a few hours back. The i7110 is the Nokia N79 rival from Samsung and has better specs than it's rival. The i7110 also runs on the S60 3rd Edition FP2 like the N79. The i7110 is very slim in size with a thickness of just 12.9 mm. Also it has a OLED 2.6 inch QVGA Screen as compared to the 2.4 inch screen of N79. The Nokia N85 has a similar 2.6 inch AMOLED screen in it. It has an 8-way Optical Trackpad like the Samsung i900 Omnia which allows the user to move the cursor just like a mouse.

Coming to specs, the i7110 has in addition to the screen, a 5 Mega Pixel Camera with dual LED flash. It also has geotagging, face, smile and blink detection. Also it has Wi-fi(with DLNA certification) for surfing as well as GPS for navigation. Samsung also bundles it's Samsung Navigator application which has maps of 10 European cities in it including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Helsinki, London, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Paris, and Rome. However you can't use the Nokia Maps like you do in Nokia Mobile Phones as it's incompatible with Samsung S60 phones (atleast till now).

The i7110 can also double up as camcorder with impressive VGA recording capability and support for high speed recording also. It also comes with DNSe 2.0 Engine, like the Samsung Innov8. Among other things it also has a FM Transmitter which allows transmitting any playing song to a nearby FM receiver. The FM transmitter can also be switched on to receive voice navigation guide via car speakers when using GPS. It also supports DivX playback natively, without any need for conversion. It also boasts of TV-out so you can view your videos & photos on your TV.

It comes with a MicroSD Card slot with support for SDHC (SD High Capacity) Cards. It comes bundled with FIFA 2008 & Asphalt Games, however Nokia's N-Gage can't run on it. The only thing missing in it are a Camera Lens Cover, Xenon Flash & a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The Samsung i7110 should be available in Europe just in time for the Christmas holidays. It will start shipping first in Russia from November 2008 with other markets following soon.

Detailed Specs of Samsung i7110 :

Nokia N79 & Nokia N85 First Impressions by Eldar Murtazin of Mobile Review

Eldar has published his first thoughts on both N85 & N79, which were officially launched by Nokia yesterday.

One of the N85's highlights is its 2.6 inch OLED-display capable of 16 million colors. While these bare numbers might not tell you much, the picture quality will for sure - the N85 is an enormous improvement over the Nokia N95 with its brighter and juicier colors along with very readable fonts. All in all, it's one of the best units we have seen yet. To tease you a little, let me say this - I managed to have a sneak peek at the next generation of screens some time ago (boasting the VGA resolution) and found that they were quite in line with the screen utilized in the Nokia N85.

To get a better idea of what the Nokia N79 is, let's start with a simple question - what phone the N79 aims to replace. While its closest sibling in Nokia's portfolio is the N78, it doesn't quite qualify as a full-fledged replacement, since they target different demographics. In fact, this phone comes in to take the place of the most popular Nseries smartphone to date - the N73. Given the way the N73 was positioned back in the day - decent camera for very little money - the N79 seems to fall under exactly the same category. It brings together a 5 Mpix camera module with a lens cover and the rich feature pack of N78.

Nokia N79 & Nokia N85 First Impressions by Smape

Smape has published a first impressions article on N79 & N85.

N85 and N79 turned out to have a rather ambiguous nature, making it hard to tell for sure which niche either of the two was meant to occupy. The junior N79 model can be mistakenly attributed with being a replacement or a sequel of N78. It's simply another minor portfolio expansion with a handful of parameters tweaked to differ from the original handset. N78 isn't phasing out yet, the handset is to stay as one of the most affordable and balanced business smartphones (sporting also some fashion phone traits, let alone the rich functionality) for quite a long while from now on.

Nokia N79 - Powerful fusion of technology and style
August 26, 2008

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today unveiled the Nokia N79, the latest addition to the Nokia Nseries range that combines intelligent and customizable design with a fully-loaded multimedia computer. Behind its sleek exterior, the Nokia N79 is a technology powerhouse. It offers a full range of multimedia experiences including integrated navigation, music with FM transmitter, high-speed connectivity, superior web browsing, at least 10 pre-loaded N-Gage games and an advanced 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. The Nokia N79 is expected to begin shipping in October 2008, with an estimated retail price of EUR 350, before taxes and subsidies.

"The Nokia N79 packs cutting-edge technology into a compact design - a characteristic of the iconic Nseries - that allows people to discover, create and share their passions with others," said Juha Kokkonen, Director, Nokia Nseries. "It has been designed for those who want a device that is as appealing as it is powerful and comes with interchangeable covers that have automatically matching screen themes. This balance of performance and style means that it is a powerful and defining step forward from the popular and very successful Nokia N72 and Nokia N73."

Perfect for the style conscious, the Nokia N79 comes with Xpress-on smart covers that are available in five cool colors: Light Sea Blue, Espresso Brown, Olive Green, White and Coral Red. A combination of three of these comes with each Nokia N79.

The convergence of photos, music and navigation in the Nokia N79 combines with high-speed 3.5G HSDPA and Wi-Fi to make it quick and easy to share experiences on websites, blogs or online communities.

Experience new discoveries
The innovative technology packed into this colorful offering means that accessing a rich pool of services to further enhance individual experiences is seamless. Log on to online communities like Friendster, Flickr or YouTube or click through to Nokia services such as the Nokia Music Store, N-Gage, Nokia Maps and Share on Ovi, an online service that enables consumers to share personal pictures and videos from their mobile devices.

The 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash and video light captures sharp, clear images and video that can be edited immediately, without the need for a PC. Images can also be geotagged to specific locations. What's more, the Nokia N79 comes packaged with a 4 GB microSD memory card that makes it possible to store around 3,000 songs, approximately 2,500 pictures and up to four hours of DVD-quality video clips that can be organized by albums or tags and uploaded directly to Share on Ovi or third party services. The addition of a sliding lens cover helps protect the top-quality lens when not in use.

Nokia Maps makes it easy to explore and navigate new surroundings by accessing more than 15 million points of interest (POI). In-built A-GPS providing turn-by-turn navigation - for walking or driving - comes with a three month integrated license on the Nokia N79.

A Friendster widget will also be made available for the Nokia N79 via the WidSets service. This will allow people to browse Friendster friends' profiles, view and post shoutouts, upload pictures taken with their handset, and browse their own and friends' photo albums. All this enables more effective communication with friends while away from a computer using the Nokia N79. New users can even register for Friendster directly on their device via a link to Friendster's mobile site (m.friendster.com), create an account, and instantly begin participating in the Friendster global community.

To ensure each device is as distinctive as its user, customizable features are available at the Nokia Download! store, a one stop personalization shop, already embedded in Nokia Nseries devices. It lets consumers create a unique experience for themselves by offering easy access to a multitude of popular ringtones, branded entertainment content, the latest in mobile gaming and dynamic applications for personalizing mobile devices to the user's own preferences.
